May flew by! We have done a lot of learning and worked hard to have quick and quiet transitions between activities. We earned a Fun Friday, where we completed a replica of Plimoth Plantation and played with Ryan (who was overwhelmed by the attention, but LOVED meeting such sweet future babysitters!). Here is a closer look at what we have been working on:
Reading - We finished our character development unit with final projects that explain how the main characters in our books changed. We then previewed our next unit, in which we will study books by Dick King-Smith (author of Babe, the Gallant Pig). We will be running student directed Book Clubs and are really excited to be collaborating with our book clubs!
Social Studies & Writing - Our pilgrim journals are really coming along, and students are showing a real understanding of the challenges the pilgrims faced. We are becoming more accustomed to the terms Pilgrims used, and how to take on a "Pilgrim perspective" in our writing. We are still reading the journal of a young pilgrim girl, which helped us to build our 3D replica of Plimoth Plantation. First, we measured out our allotment of land. Then, we planned the size and location for our house. Finally, we used card stock to build a house, added a fence and garden, and fit each family plot together to make our complete settlement. We even build the fort! We look forward to seeing the real village on Friday.
Math and Science - S'Math has been a success! We investigated materials, weight, and will complete the 10-10-10 challenge tomorrow. We've learned the importance of having a standard measure of weight in order to compare whether an object is heavy for its size or light for its size. We have also learned about grams and enjoy using our "hexagram" weights to help identify how much weight different objects have. We learned that even tiny things have weight, because as Colleen said, "Something is something!" and Gabriel added on, "You cannot have less than nothing."
Reminders:
- Our Plimoth Plantation field trip is Friday, June 2! Please pack a bag snack and lunch as we will be eating picnic-style on the field trip.
- Color Day is next Tuesday, June 6! Team colors will be coming home this week.
Thanks for sending in the fan, wipes, pencils, and well-rested students! It's going to be a great few weeks!
