Hello Room 31 students and families!
We had a busy week, and are looking forward to some fun events before winter break. Here is a look into our learning and some upcoming special events: Math In math, we started our unit on addition and subtraction. We learned two new games (available on PearsonRealize.com) called Capture 5 and Close to 100. Students have shown great math thinking skills and good-fit strategies when trying to find the sum or difference of two digit numbers. We will continue to work with place value and addition/subtraction next week. Reading We learned about research and note-taking for our first long-term reading project. Partners were assigned a Native American tribe to read about, take notes on, and create a poster that teaches about the tribe. We learned about the main idea versus details and how to put the main idea into our own words. We are also continuing to enjoy Matilda, and students are making wonderful connections to the story. Writing Students are doing an excellent job with their personal narratives. This week, we learned about story starters, show-don't tell, adding vivid details, and using transition words. We enjoyed listening to students' stories in the Author's Chair. Next week, we will continue drafting and working on dialogue. Upcoming Events: Tuesday, December 19th: Buddies! Wednesday, December 20th: Snowflake Activity Thursday, December 21st: Movie (3rd-5th grade in cafeteria), presentation from class at dismissal Friday, December 22nd: Pajama Day and All School Sing Along *We also will present a project to some special teachers on Wednesday! Enjoy your weekend, Ms. K Dear families,
How was your week? I know ours was good. Here are some of the things we did this week: Understanding Our Differences by Oden One special activity we did was Understanding our Differences. This guy came in and he had hearing aids and he told us about his life. Also, we learned about a alarm clock that has a buzzer that goes underneath your pillow and wakes you up when you set it for. Reading by Dennis and DeAnna In reading, we read more of Matilda. We also are reading nonfiction. We worked on the elements of nonfiction, like pictures, table of contents, and headings. Writing by Hannah In writing, we are working on our personal narratives. A personal narrative is a true story that happened to you in a small amount of time. We learned how to make out story detailed by using our 5 senses. I am writing about the time I got stuck in the mud. We also had Author's Chair, which is when someone gets to share their personal narratives. Math by Lia In math, we are working on line plots. We also measured different things. We did a line plot quiz, and we worked on chrome books. It was all very fun! Inclusive Schools Week We launched our Inclusive Schools Week with an All School Meeting on Monday. We watched a video about what inclusion means. We read a book called It's Okay to be Different. We also made Quilt Squares that explain what inclusion means to us, and how we appreciate one another's differences. Technology Ms. Busa came to our classroom to teach us to use kind words when texting or online. We discussed how Words Matter, and the effect our words have on other people when we are in front of them or in front of a screen. We did a fun activity on a "Padlet" to explain what we learned about kindness and acceptable use of devices. We had a great week back after the Thanksgiving holiday! In reading, we finished our mystery unit. Students enjoyed finishing their books and having Book Talks, where students lead a thoughtful discussion about the text (without help from the teacher!). The groups did a wonderful job of incorporating mystery vocabulary, referring to evidence from the text, and building on one another's ideas. Also, in snack we are reading Matilda by Roald Dahl while students are eating. We just finished the chapter when Matilda super glues her dad’s hat to his head (eek!). Next week, we will start our nonfiction unit. In math, we started our measuring unit. We measured the classroom, how far we can jump, how big our foot is, and how far we can blow a pattern block. We also used pearsonrealize.com. We used our measurement data to make line plots and make observations about the graphs. In writing, we continued working on our personal narratives. We did more brainstorming and learned about showing emotion in our writing. We continued writing about people, places, and events that are important to us, and finding a "seed" idea that we have a lot to say about. We also learned about our second core value: ASSERTION. We learned about how people can respond to conflicts as a MOUSE (passive), MONSTER (aggressive), or ME (assertive). Being assertive means standing up for yourself and others in a respectful way. One way to be assertive is to use "I" messages: I feel ___ when you ___ because ___. I want you to ___. Another assertive strategy is to walk away if you are frustrated, and then later use an "I" message when you can use a respectful tone. Students did a great job and seem to understand the importance of being assertive. Check out your student's Friday Journal for more details about our week! Best, Ms. K (with help from Oden and Sinead) |
