Hello students and families,
We had a fantastic field trip to Plimoth Plantation! A huge thank you to our chaperones for helping make the day a success. Students were so excited to see the Wampanoag home site and Pilgrim village. They asked thoughtful questions and sketched important objects from life in the 1600's. It's hard to believe June is already here! We are still hard at work. Here's a look at what we have been doing: In science/math, we wrapped up our S'Math Investigations. We focused on 4 areas: Materials, Weight, Standard Measures, and Volume. Students did a fantastic jobs thinking like scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. We had to measure, explore, and test out different ideas. Students particularly enjoyed the 10-10-10-10 challenge, where they had to construct an object using 10 grams of styrofoam, 10 grams of plasticine, 10 grams of wooden stirrers, and 10 grams of aluminum foil. Our next unit is focusing on multiplication and division skills to help our facts become more automatic. In reading, we are in student-run Book Clubs. Students are making agendas, reading, and having Book Talks about different books by Dick King-Smith. Each week, they are expected to write one response in the form of a journal entry, character feelings/traits poster, CER, poem, or other type of writing. Groups decided on rules and expectations for Book Clubs. For example, some groups require one "Say Something" post it per chapter to bring to their Book Talk. Other groups write a journal entry from different perspectives after discussing the books. It takes a lot of cooperation and planning, but students are doing a great job! We are also listening to Lady Lollypop by Dick King-Smith, and are making connections between his different books. In writing/social studies, we have almost finished our pilgrim journals. It has been interesting to learn about the Mayflower and life on Plimoth Plantation. We read two books the detail the daily lives of pilgrims, and then wrote an entry about our own pilgrim's daily activities. We also learned about building the settlement and receiving help from Squanto after the first long winter. We had a great time meeting some of "our" pilgrims during the field trip! Only a couple more weeks to go! We are looking forward to Color Day next Tuesday. Hope everyone is having a wonderful week! Best, Mrs. K |
