Hi everyone,
We had a great short week, and look forward to returning after a restful Thanksgiving break! Here is a look into what we've been working on this week.
Spelling: We reviewed the 1-1-1 rule and practiced adding suffixes. Students practiced as a whole class, in small groups, and independently. We also reviewed the exception to the rule, when 1-1-1 words end in "x." Next, we will be working on words that end with "e" and short/long vowel sounds.
Reading: We continued to work on making inferences as we read. We read the book Molly's Pilgrim, and then answered questions that required us to use our schema + clues from the text. In the book, Molly realizes there are all kinds of pilgrims, not just the Pilgrims from the Mayflower. Her mother is a pilgrim from Russia who came to America for religious freedom and the chance for a better life. We also listened to Library Lion, a book illustrated by Kevin Hawkes who is visiting our school on December 4th!
Math: We finished The Big Dinner by calculating the cooking time for the turkey and having our last Math Congress for the unit. Students did a wonderful job of explaining their strategies and making a visual of their thinking. We also did guided M.A.T.H centers, where small groups rotated between practicing Math facts, did journal pages At their desk, met at the Teacher table for multiplication practice, and played Hands on math games on the rug.
Writing: We worked on our Small Moment stories, and continued editing, conferencing, and typing our final narratives. Some students shared their work in the Author's Chair and received helpful (and respectful) feedback. We worked on the language conventions such as spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. We also continued to revise the lead, heart, and ending of our stories.
I am so thankful to have such a hardworking, cooperative, and kind group of students this year! I am really impressed with every child in this class, and I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
