Hello students and families!
It's been another wonderful week! Thank you again to everyone who came to Curriculum Night. Here is an overview of what we have been doing this week!
Math: On Monday, students put finishing touches on their Movie Challenge posters and we held our first Math Congress. Some students presented their posters which showed the strategy they used, answers, and a proof! The rest of us practiced being thoughtful audience members who could give helpful feedback at the end of each presentation.
Then, we moved onto learning about Data and Graphs. We reviewed tally marks and bar graphs by collecting our own data and making our own graph. We also learned about pictographs, and recognized the importance of looking at the key, because sometimes the picture represents more than 1 data point. We worked in small groups for those who need review and those who needed to extend our learning. Finally, we worked on line plots!
Reading: This week, we practiced our Reading Stamina, which is up to 40 minutes! As students were reading independently, others have been reading with a teacher to determine their current reading level. Students are doing a wonderful job of giving a detailed summary, looking back into the text, and thinking beyond the text.
We also listened to a biography of Snowflake Bentley, a farmer-scientist who photographed snowflakes. We discussed how to to a High-5 Retell of the book as well as Wilson Bentley's character traits (hardworking, explorer, scientist, unique, and so on). Students were amazed by the detailed photographs, and inspired to think like scientists during our leaf observation {see Science section!}
Science: After reading about Snowflake Bentley, students did an excellent job of collecting leaves to sketch. We used hand lenses to "zoom in" on the different leaves and added labels, color, and detail to our drawings. Then, we had a Gallery Walk to admire one another's work!
Writing: Students completed a narrative story of a small moment in their life, which will help teachers in understanding their strengths and needs as writers. We also continued working on quick writes, including EEK!, which students enjoyed sharing with one another {as a class, we do NOT like spiders!} Finally, we worked on a written response to A Bad Case of Stripes.
Circle Time: We discussed the problem scale, and when something is just a "glitch" as opposed to a "gigantic problem." Some problems need a teacher's help, some need a classmate's help, and others are just "oh well, move on" problems. We also talked about the character traits we look for in friends, and how to be a good friend.
LAST CALL for Scholastic Orders! I will use any and all bonus points to order new books for our classroom library!
