Good afternoon Room 48 Students and families!
Our 3rd week of 3rd grade was terrific! We finalized our Classroom Rules, which will help us to achieve our Hopes and Goals:
* Treat everyone, everything, and our school with RESPECT.
1. Have fun and try your best.
2. Treat others kindly.
3. Make good choices.
Math: During math, we continued to review telling time to the nearest minute. Then, many of us moved on to practicing elapsed time. We completed a movie challenge, where students looked at a movie theatre schedule and tried to fit as many movies as possible into one day! (without being late or repeating any movies). Today, we started working with data and bar graphs, which we will continue next week. We created a bar graph of our class birthdays, and collected the data by making cupcakes {see photo of Jayda with her cupcake below!).
Reading: Our main focus in reading this week was to build our reading stamina. Stamina is doing something for along time without getting tired or giving up. Currently, our class can read for 16 minutes and 38 seconds, but our goal is 35 minutes. We also worked on talking about books in a thoughtful way, and whole-body listening.
Writing: Students really enjoyed writing this week! We launched Quick Writes, where students have a short amount of time to write continuously ("steam of consciousness" style. Our first quick write was to Write from a Noun for three minutes, and the noun was TREES. Today, we completed a 5-minute quick write, Writing from Our Names (first, middle, or last). It was fun to hear different students share how they feel about their name and its origins.
Science: We created a cover and Table of Contents for our Science/Social Studies Binder. Then, we gathered leaves or sticks from outside, and did careful scientific diagrams with labels and observations. Look at photos 2-7 in the gallery below, and you will be amazed by the realistic copies of the various leaves and sticks.
