Hi everyone!
THANK YOU for the wonderful classroom gifts! Your generosity is greatly appreciated, especially the new books and games (although Ms. J and I are MOST excited for the 3-hole punch). Our new options for good fit books and indoor recess will be really helpful in the new year!
In reading this week, we continued work on our Native American slideshows. Students are showing real progress in their computer/Google slides skills. Partners edited printed paper copies of their slides to ensure they followed the expectations, and wrote in picture/photo requests. Groups also added tables of contents, glossaries, and captions. Some groups presented this week and did a wonderful job of facing the audience and teaching the most important facts, or main idea, about each topic.
We are also enjoying a new read aloud, Frindle by Andrew Clements. Students are making wonderful connections between Frindle and Matilda. In partners, we read an informational text about how to make a snowflake. We recognized many of the nonfiction text features that we are using in our slideshows.
Our personal narratives are coming along! We decided on a strong lead to hook our readers. Then, we learned about the heart of the story, or most important part. We edited our work to make sure our "heart" is colorful (dialogue, action, five senses, and thoughts). We printed our drafts and asked for feedback from peers.
We continued sharing our wonderful timeline projects, and were thrilled to share them with families Wednesday morning! Students have been asking thoughtful questions and truly enjoyed sharing and seeing important moments from one another's lives.
We wrapped up our geometry unit with some fun area and perimeter activities. Students designed their own Dream Houses and calculated the area of each room. Then, they calculated the total area of the entire home! We worked on more mystery perimeter problems, where the total perimeter was given but the length of one or more sides was missing.
We also fit in some winter-themed fun! We made beaded and paper snowflakes, watched a movie in the cafeteria, and had a cozy Reading Marathon in our pajamas.
I hope everyone has a relaxing winter break! Thank you again for the thoughtful gifts and for all you do for your children!
Warmly,
Mrs. Kalich
