Warmly, Ms. Kalich Dear students and families,
Thank you so much for coming in to view our timelines! Third graders did an excellent job of showing important moments from their lives in chronological order. They also did well presenting timelines to their classmates. Here is a look into more of our learning this week! In math, we are continuing to work on representing data. We learned about bar graphs, double bar graphs, and pictographs. We are using our math talk moves to make thoughtful observations about graphs. Some students started collecting their own data, and are organizing the information in a visual way. We will continue to learn about data and graphing next week. Our mystery guided reading groups are going wonderfully! Students enjoy keeping track of clues, suspects, and red herrings in their notebooks. We are focusing on making and revising predictions as we read, and keeping track of key details. In writing, we made Heart Maps that display people, places, activities, and things that are important to us. The heart maps will help us to brainstorm personal narrative story ideas next week. We also learned the cursive letters u and w. We had a lot of special events this week! Our Creative Arts and Sciences program was a presentation by author/illustrator Matt Tavares. Students were inspired by his work, and enjoyed hearing about his process for drawing and writing a story. We also welcomed Lia's mom, Tal, into our classroom to teach us a Thanksgiving Calypso song. We will be performing the song Tuesday at our Family Morning Meeting (8:45-9:00). Last, we went to the 4th Grade All School Meeting, and heard what Franklin students and teachers are thankful for. Please let me know if your child will be absent at all next week, and enjoy the weekend! Dear students and families,
We are writing our Thursday journals today, since there is no school tomorrow! We've had a busy, short week, and can't wait to share some details about our learning with you. In reading, we have been meeting with our guided reading mystery groups. We are enjoying Agatha, Girl of Mystery: The Curse of the Pharaoh, Nate the Great and the Phony Clue, Milo and Jazz: The Case of the Poisoned Pig, The Fenway Foul-Up, and The Ball Game with No One at Bat. Groups are focusing on making, and revising, predictions as they read. They are also working on taking notes and keeping track of characters, clues, and inferences as they read. In writing, we are finishing our adapted folktales. Some students typed, while others wrote on the special 3rd Grade Final Draft Paper (donations welcome, see our Amazon list!). Next week, we will start our next unit: personal narratives. We will brainstorm topics that are important to us, and then decide on a small moment to write about. In science, we learned about the layers of bark. We colored in a tree and showed the layers of bark. In the center, there is heartwood. Outside of that, there is sapwood where you can get the sap. The next layer is the cambium, followed by the inner bark. Last, there is the outer bark, which protects the tree. (By Aiden and Jinn Teagan) In social studies, we are moving onto our next unit: Maps! We also brought in our wonderful timeline projects. Students did an excellent job of following directions and describing important events from their lives. We are enjoying hearing each other's timeline presentations. Our focus in word work this week was suffixes. We learned about making words plural using -es or -s. Students did well making words plural, and will continue with different suffixes next week! We hope everyone has a wonderful 3-day weekend! -Room 31 Reading In reading we read the mystery of King Karfu. We figured out the secret codes. We also practiced guided reading groups. We read other fun books. -Jinn Teagan In math we have been doing quizzes. They weren't long, and were on multiplication and division. Here is one division equation: 100 ÷ 4 =25. We also wrote our own multiplication and division story problems. -Oden Science In science, we did an observation and drawing of a tree. We labeled the tree with the different parts. Also, we took a quiz about the parts of a tree. -Room 31 Social Studies In social studies, we got our first assignment. We will be working on timelines about important events from our lives. We saw Ms. Kalich and Ms. Merrell's timelines to help us understand the expectations for the project. Timelines are due Thursday, November 9th. -Room 31 Writing In writing, we adapted folktales. I adapted Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. I made it Isa and the 3 Bunnies. When we started adapting our stories, we wrote in a draft packet. When we finished, we typed or wrote our final draft. I typed my final draft, and finished it! That is what happened in writing. Writing is AWESOME! Specials In art, we did a drawing game different games at different table's which was really fun! Next, in P.E., we did the ship game. In music we played our recorders. -Skye and Oden Buddies In buddies we did a pumpkins about your self. I learned my buddy has two dogs and she is getting a bunny on march 31 her birthday. The buddies are in second grade. -DeAnna |
