This week has FLOWN by! We had an AWESOME last day, and here is a look at our final days of third grade!
Math/Science: Students did an amazing job with our S'Math investigations of objects, materials, weight, and mass. On Monday, they accepted The Marshmallow Challenge. Teams were given a kit that contained 20 pieces of spaghetti, string, tape, scissors, and one marshmallow. The task was to build the tallest freestanding structure in 20 minutes. Third graders did an amazing job of planning, constructing, and problem-solving during the challenge. Although one structure broke, and another bent below the desk, all three teams had fun cooperating and working together.
We also SAVED FRED, a gummy worm whose boat capsized! Partners worked together to save Fred (a gummy worm) and place him into a life preserver (gummy ring) WITHOUT using their hands, and without letting Fred touch the water (desks). They had 4 paper clips that could be used, and did a fabulous job - EVERY group was able to save Fred, and wrote a lab report outlining their process.
Reading: We continued reading Night of the Spadefoot Toads, and discussed the conclusion of the story. We also worked on our reading stamina, and making connections as we read. We reflected about how much we have grown as readers this year!
Writing: Students collaborated and continued working on their fabulous fairy tales. We also continued learning about figurative language and different types of poetry. We learned about acrostic poems and haiku poems, and then wrote our own summer themed poems. We finished the week with our own Bio Poems, which tell about our characteristics, wonderings, fears, likes, and feelings. We will share our Bio Poems with the fourth grade teachers!
On our last 2 days, the class was VERY helpful (as always) in cleaning, packing, and organizing. We enjoyed a slideshow (e-mail me if you didn't get a link!), Alliteration Awards, signed each other's beach balls, and got our summer homework clipboards!
This has been a fun and memorable year, and I thank all of you for being so gracious with all of the transitions! It was a joy to teach such a kind, motivated group of students. I cannot wait to catch up with everyone in September.
Have a WONDERFUL summer!
