Hello students and families!
A huge thank you to our chaperones who came to the Arnold Arboretum this morning. We had a great time exploring and learning about trees and how they were used by Native Americans! Check out some photos below.
Here is a look into our learning this week, but for an even better summary please read your child's Friday Journal. Note: Some students glued in a planning sheet since we were short on time with the field trip.
Literacy (Reading and Writing): We continued working on stamina and learning how to have successful book talks in groups or with a partner. We read a story about Sonia Sotomayor, who faced challenges growing up but still became a Supreme Court Justice. We compared Sonia Sotomayor to Wilson Bentley using a Venn Diagram to highlight their similarities and differences.
Then, we worked on open responses that used evidence from the text to support our answers. Students had great responses, such as "Both Sonia and Wilson's parents sacrificed for their children's dreams" or "Both Sonia and WIlson showed perseverance."
We planned our Friday Journals using a template from Ms. K, and then some of us wrote our own final draft to bring home. Finally, we listened to a story, The Girl Who Spun Gold, which was a preview of our next literacy unit.
Math: We continued to Count Around the Class and use our 100-Charts to observe relationships between different numbers and multiples. We discussed how problems that involve 3's and 6's are related, just like the numbers highlighted on their respective 100-charts. We learned expectations for playing math games, and learned Multiplication Top It (photos below!) Next week, we will continue looking into good fit strategies for multiplication problems.
We are looking forward to more cursive, science, and social studies next week!
Important Dates:
Wednesday, October 4th - Walk to School Day
Friday, October 6th - Creative Arts and Science Program, Eric Olsen "The Tree Guy"
Monday, October 9th - No School, Columbus Day
