Happy New Year! It is great to be back, and we are getting to work in 2016.
Math: We reviewed area and perimeter for a Unit Assessment. Then, we started investigating place value. We learned about Place Value Street, which helped us to read and understand the values of six digit numbers. We also played games to improve our understanding of place value. Then, we moved on to reviewing addition strategies for adding two 3-digit numbers. Finally, we launched our next unit, Muffle's Truffles!
Reading: We continued working on The Wampanoag Year during guided reading. Students worked in small groups to identify the main idea for each heading, such as Food in the Winter or Celebrations in Summer. We also worked on writing an open response to what we read using evidence from the text.
Spelling: This week, we learned to recognize the schwa (unexpected vowel sound) in a two syllable word. For example, the second /a/ in the word SALAD is a schwa sound.
Writing: To restart our information or expert writing, we created a web to help organize our main topic and headings. Then, we tried to teach small groups about our topic for 2 minutes. This helped us to determine if our topic would be a good fit, or if we needed to choose a new topic. Next, we used the web to create a Table of Contents, which included the main ideas we will explain in our books. We used the Table of Contents headings in a Boxes and Bullets graphic organizer, which allowed us to write the main idea and details for each chapter.
Hour of Code: Mr. Smalley joined us to help with an Hour of Code, which helped us use our critical thinking skills and learn about technology.
