I hope everyone had a wonderful vacation! Here is a look into our first week of 2017.
Writing: We wrote our own "Writing Resolutions" before wrapping up our Personal Narratives this week. Students committed to different resolutions, like "I will use spicier words" or "I will add more dialogue." Our resolutions helped give us the motivation to edit, add to, and finish typing our stories. We worked with peers and teachers in writing conferences where we received one GLOW (what works well in the narrative) and one GROW (what to add or work on to make the story better).
Reading: This week, we learned specific strategies to help us become experts at answering questions about a text. First, we met in small groups to practice "Jail the Details," which means marking up the key words in the question and thinking: What am I trying to find out? Then, we learned the "Slash the Trash" strategy, where we put an X next to answers that do not make sense. We practiced the strategies with fiction and nonficion texts, and will continue to learn more strategies in groups next week. We will also start practicing for homework.
We finished presenting our Native American slideshows, and learned a lot of facts about different tribes. Check out photos of our presentations below! We also compared and contrasted the different tribes.
Math: In math, we worked on place value. First, we heard the Place Value Street story, which explains how to read numbers up to the 100,000s. Then, we practiced telling the value of a digit based on its place in a number.
On Friday, our new math unit launched: Muffle's Truffles! The entire grade visited room 31 to meet Muffles and his assistants. Muffles makes delicious truffles, but needs help putting the truffles into boxes. Students had to determine how many boxes of 10 would be needed for each flavor, and how many truffles would be left over for an assortment box. We will make posters and have a Math Congress on Monday, and continue to help Muffles next week!
As a grade, we reviewed school expectations and how to be a successful TEAM at Franklin. We also reviewed expectations for routines in our own classroom, such as lining up, getting organized at the end of the day, and indoor recess. We will continue to work on being cooperative, empathetic, and responsible so our classroom community runs smoothly for the second half of third grade!
