Reading: We continue to enjoy hearing Night of the Spadefoot Toads and making predictions about what will happen next. We also discussed strategies for answering within the text questions and beyond the text questions. When the answer is within the text, we always go back into the text and skim for key words from the question. Then, we point to or underline the exact answer. For beyond the text questions, we again skim for key words, but then have to gather clues and use our schema to make an educated guess. We also continue to work with figurative language, and made "Out of this World Similes" to create our own alien creatures.
Writing: To help us with our fairy tales, we did a fun drama activity! Each student received 2-3 cards with instructions on them. The instructions included a prompt and then an action, such as, "When you see Cinderella show off her new shoes, act like a fairy godmother who is cleaning up a mess!" We had a great time showing off our acting skills and trying to figure out which fairy tale characters were "on-stage." We have been working on our plans, rough drafts, and revisions to our fairy tales, and hope to publish next week! We will also be working with different kinds of poetry.
Math: In S'Math, we returned to our investigations using GRAMS as the standard unit of measurement. We worked with a partner to weigh the 8 cubes and add them to our weight line. Students did a wonderful job of measuring and really love the hands-on inquiry based unit! We also solved a Doggy Dilemma, where students had to follow multiple steps to solve a difficult problem involving area and perimeter. Students had to:

Students did a wonderful job of measuring and really love the hands-on inquiry based unit! We also solved a Doggy Dilemma, where students had to follow multiple steps to solve a difficult problem involving area and perimeter. Students had to:
- Select a dog from three different breeds
- Select materials to build a fence based on the dog's needs (how much exercise the dog needs, if the dog digs or not, and how high the dog can jump)
- Decide on the area and perimeter for the dog's pen (keeping in mind that a 50 sq. ft. kiddie pool must also fit in the backyard)
- Calculate the price of the materials needed
- Design the backyard on graph paper
- *Bonus: Write a letter detailing the process and solutions
Enjoy the wonderful weather this weekend, and have a happy Father's day!
