Happy Friday! Hope you've had a great week. Here is a look at what we did in Room 31.
Writing:
Math: This week, we learned about inches, feet, and yards. We also learned about the metric system and examined centimeters and meters. We completed two sorts and decided the best unit for measuring various objects. For example, a pencil could be measured using centimeters or inches, while a door could be measured in meters or yards.
Then, we learned about perimeter, or the distance around a shape. In teams, we built different shapes using straws. Then, we measured around our shapes to the nearest quarter inch and added the sides together to find the total perimeter. The next day, we learned how to figure out the length of a side using what we know about shapes and perimeter. We used different strategies to determine the length of the missing side, and then added up the total perimeter.
Reading: Our next reading focus is informational text, or non-fiction. We did a scavenger hunt to find different features of nonfiction, like bold words, captions, and glossaries. Then, we used the I PICK method to find good fit informational books. We learned about taking notes as we read, and filled in an FQR organizer (Facts, Questions, Responses) to organize our notes.
