Here is a look at what we have been working on this week.
Math: We continued learning about measurement, but moved on to the metric system. We learned about centimeters and millimeters. To practice, we measured different line segments and animals. We also measured different objects using inches then using centimeters to compare the lengths. We took a quiz to check our understanding of inches and centimeters. Then, we moved on to an open-ended question about calculating the amount of paint needed to cover a wall. We worked with a partner to determine if one paint can, which holds 100 square feet of paint, was enough to cover the wall.
Writing: This week, we continued to have "Student Spotlights," when students shared their small moment stories and asked for respectful feedback. We printed our stories and gave them a final edit. We also worked on cursive letters and reviewed some important rules of cursive writing. Students also had a chance to free write in their writing journals. Next, we will organize and start drafting our informational writing.
Reading: We continued to work on informational text features. We read non-fiction articles about different types of penguins, and then worked in groups to write the important facts we learned. We also worked with partners on our Native American tribe research. Students did an excellent job taking concise notes on important details that relate to the main idea, such as the food, clothing, and homes of each tribe. Then, partners created a poster to show the most important details to teach us about their tribe.
Spelling: This week, we continued working with v-e words, along with the exception. We also worked on adding suffixes to v-e words (hope --> hoping). During reading centers, some groups practiced more with compound words, syllables, and long versus short vowel sounds.
Social Studies: We continued discussing events and inventions from long ago and how they help us today. Then, we learned about a timeline project that will tell important events from our own lives. Timelines are due next Wednesday, December 16th, and students will present them to the class.
Understanding Our Differences (as told by third graders): During TAP on Thursday, we had an awesome program about Understanding our Differences. The program taught students about people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They heard a speech from a Franklin School dad who is deaf, and has hearing aids on each ear to help him. They also learned some sign language, as well as some parts of the ear.
Have a wonderful weekend!
