Hi everyone! We had another fantastic week.
In math, we worked on our measurement skills. We investigated rulers and heard the story of "The King's Foot," which sparked a discussion about why we need standard measurements. Then, we worked closely on measuring to the nearest inch, half inch, and quarter inch. Students labeled and color-coded rulers which helped us to measure more accurately. We worked on measuring everyday objects, mustaches, shapes, and more.
Our mystery reading unit wrapped up this week! Groups enjoyed finding out who committed the various crimes, and completed different projects or responses after finishing the story. We are experts on mystery elements and look forward to reading more mysteries!
In writing, we started work toward our Personal Narratives. We wrote quick drafts of various stories about important people or places inspired by our Heart Maps. We learned about telling a seed story versus a watermelon story. We also learned about using a storyteller's voice to tell a STORY, not a reporter's voice to tell a SUMMARY. We selected our favorite seed story idea, and then practiced telling it to a partner. Next week we will continue to build up our narrative writing skills!
We also launched our first social studies unit by examining timelines. Timelines help us to understand historical events from the past. We discussed CHRONOLOGICAL order through two activities. First, we put our birthdays in order by date (Mrs. Kalich was born WAY before the third graders). Then, we placed important events from history, like Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, in order by year.
During word work, we learned the 1-1-1 rule: words with 1 syllable, 1 short vowel, and 1 consonant after the vowel follow a certain rule when adding a vowel suffix. 1-1-1 words need to double the consonant when adding a vowel suffix. For example, MOP is a 1-1-1 word. To add the -ing suffix, we double the P and spell MOPPING. We will continue to work on this rule next week!
Enjoy the weekend and Happy December! Stay healthy! :)
