Reading: We are continuing to work on writing CER responses and reading our nonfiction Wampanoag texts. We have learned a lot about the Wampanoag culture, history, and some famous Wampanoag people. Students are doing a great job of echoing the question, finding evidence directly in the book, and then linking the claim and evidence together with a strong reason.
Writing: We learned a way to organize and draft our Informational books: Boxes and Bullets. Then, we learned about putting our details in an order that makes sense. We also learned about elaborating, or saying more, about some facts to help teach our readers essential information. Next week, we will work on using transition words, strong leads, and endings for our chapters.
Math: We started our unit on Perimeter, Area, and Polygons. Students had to measure "An Ant's Walk" around a standard sheet of paper and calculate the total perimeter. We also had a math workshop where we worked on measuring the perimeter of objects and shapes, finding the missing sides of a shape, and adding the lengths together to get the total perimeter. We enjoyed a lesson taught by two fourth grade experts on multiplication and division strategies. Next week, we will continue working on perimeter.
Word Work: This week, we learned about the SCHWA: when a vowel makes an unexpected sound. Students completed a sort where they identified the vowel with the schwa sound. For example, in "the" /e/ says "uh."
Portfolios: We spent some time this week reflecting on our learning and gathering evidence for our Portfolios. Students look forward to leading their own conferences, and are thinking about what kinds of work will show their progress, effort, and achievement in third grade.
Thanks for signing up for conferences! Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. K
