Hello everyone!
We had a fantastic first week of February, and enjoyed the warm weather! Here is a look at what we have been working on.
Math: We continued to work on our division skills. We reviewed the steps to solve a division problem, and to solve a division word problem. We identified important words like dividend, divisor, and quotient. We also did a sort of multiplication problems and division problems, and examined the key words used in each. In multiplication problems, we saw words like times, in all, combined, and total, while in division we saw shared, split equally, and in each.
We also reviewed our subtraction strategies. We made ballpark estimates, and then utilized different approaches to solving multi-digit subtraction problems.Students did an excellent job of proving their answers. Finally, we worked on filling in In-Out boxes and finding the rule for In-Out boxes that used multiplication or division.
Reading: We are wrapping up our Wampanoag books in guided reading, and have come a long way with our open response skills. Third graders have become experts at using informational text features to help understand what they read. We also worked on answering multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions about a passage called "Is My Dog a Wolf?!" Students worked in small groups on doing a careful reading, and going back to the passage to find evidence. We are also focusing on our reading fluency and reading with expression.
Writing: We are still drafting our body paragraphs for our informational writing. We looked at how to organize a paragraph and make sure the order of our details makes sense. We also looked at a template on Google Docs to help us remember what to include for each heading and paragraph. We are working on checking over our work for punctuation, capitalization, and organization.
In spelling, we are working on recognizing that when "a" is at the beginning or end of a multi syllable word it says /u/. For example, Alaska and alone.
Student-led Conferences: Some students led their own parent conferences this week, and did a wonderful job! They showed off some of their work and then discussed what they are doing well at and working on. Students have been very reflective and honest, and have set excellent goals to focus on for the remainder of the school year. If you would like to schedule a conference, please e-mail me times that would work in the last week of February.
TAP: On Thursday, we went to art, music, and P.E. in the afternoon, while the third grade teachers planned our next reading unit! Students are looking forward to being in new groups. We will be focusing on community and character development.
Check out Thiago's amazing art project below, and Chiara and Teagan showing off a surprise slideshow they made! :)
