Hi everyone!
We had a busy full week, including the 3rd Grade All School Meeting and Student-Led conferences! We did an excellent job leading the school during the assembly, and students have done very well in leading their spring conferences and reflecting on their hard work.
Math: Today, we reviewed what we have learned during our geometry unit. Table groups created more flashcards to help us remember important terms. Then, we played Jeopardy! Students picked a category and amount, and had to ask the question that made sense with the answer given. For example, "A closed, 2-d figure with straight sides" would answer the question, "What is a polygon?" Students even went above and beyond and tried questions about types of triangles and solid figures, which have not been a part of this unit. We will definitely try cooperative* Jeopardy again, as it was really fun! (*Teams rotated who picked the square and tried to answer it, but our points or "money" was for the whole class).
Writing: Our informational writing pieces are back on track, after a lot of interruptions. We looked back at the steps we have worked on, such as Table of Contents, Boxes and Bullets, Research, and Paragraphs. We will continue to work on our books and start adding non-fiction text features, like photos and diagrams, to help to teach our readers.
Reading: We continued working on comparing and contrasting using a new graphic organizer: The Line of But (or, Line of However if we get too silly with the name). The graphic organizer helps us answer questions where the CER format would not make sense. The line of but is something we can draw ourselves, since it has a rectangle at the top for comparing what is the same in 2 texts and then a T-chart to contrast what is different. We wrote a response for 2 versions of The 3 Little Pigs, and are now working on comparing/contrasting 2 non-fictions articles about lynxes and wolves.
Our focus for the All School Meeting was also on reading, since we celebrated Read Across America Day on March 2nd. We taught the school a rhyming greeting, shared what different grades are learning about, read Green Eggs and Ham, and then shared Shout-Outs (compliments) for different classes in the school. Our hard work was evident, because the meeting went very smoothly and was fun!
Have a great weekend!
