Hello students and families!
We had a fantastic week, here's a look at what we've been working on:
Math: We've been working hard on Muffle's Truffles, and have investigated different types of boxes for the fancy, $1 truffles that Muffles sells. We designed larger and smaller boxes, and then figured out how many new boxes we could make by combining the original 2x5 boxes. We noticed that different designs resulted in the same price - for example, two 2x5 boxes could result in a 2x10 box or a 4x5, but both assortment boxes = $20.
Reading: We had a busy week in reading, including an Assessment Blitz where all students were assessed for current reading levels. While completing the assessments, the class worked hard on Reading Bingo boards, where they independently practiced vocabulary, spelling, writing, and reading. We also learned about writing Open Responses using evidence in response to texts. We read a passage about Claude Monet, and then wrote an open response. We reflected and revised our work, checking for the components of an open response: a strong lead, at least two pieces of evidence from the text, and an ending.
Spelling: This week, we continued to work on schwa sounds in words, and on the -et spelling pattern that sounds like /it/ in a two syllable word. We used whiteboards to practice spelling words with the a schwa vowel. We practiced our spelling words through writing in cursive, rainbow writing, and playing Sparkle.
Writing: We continued planning and drafting our Expert Writing using the "boxes and bullets" graphic organizers. We met with teachers or peers to conference about each heading before moving onto the next section. Each heading includes 3-4 key details about the topic. We are looking forward to drafting and doing more research on our topics!
Social Studies: We started learning about maps this week. We did a fun activity where we drew the outline of Massachusetts from memory, then listened to a story called Ms. Achusetts which explains the interesting shape of our state. Then, we completed a detailed sketch of Massachusetts, and compared it to our "before" sketch.
Building the System: Our Creative Arts and Science program, "Building the System," was about how water gets from the Quabbin Reservoir to the town of Newton. We built a system of pipes to different streets and buildings (our desks). We then used smaller connector pipes (straws) to bring the water directly to the building. Check out the photos from the awesome program below!
I hope everyone has a wonderful 3-day weekend!
