Hi everyone!
We had a busy 4-day week in room 48. Here is a look at what we did:
Math: We continued to work on our Muffle's Truffles unit, and investigated arrays. Each student was assigned a different number of original 2x5 boxes, like 4. Then, students designed assortment boxes that combined 4 original boxes, such as 4x10 and 8x5. They found the number of truffles, or squares, in the new design (4 boxes=40 truffles) and the different arrays that could be made. We learned about congruent shapes, and noticed that 8x5 and 5x8 are the same box, just flipped.
Reading: We started our new reading groups and books, all of which focus on the Wampanoag tribe. We are reviewing informational text features and practicing answering "beyond the text"-type questions. We are also working on using text evidence to form open responses. We reviewed making inferences based on our schema and evidence from the text, or from illustrations.
Writing: We are still working on our Boxes and Bullets, based on our headings, and learned how to take our notes and make them into a well-organized paragraph. We discussed how to make our writing interesting so that readers will want to continue reading and learning about our topic. We focused on writing a lead sentence, three or more details, and a closing. We also wrote Thinking Maps that helped us visualize and plan out our writing. This week in spelling, we focused on open syllables. Students did a wonderful job of explaining closed versus open syllables.
Have a wonderful weekend!
