Dear students and families,
Thank you for attending our Writing Celebration this morning! We are proud of our finished narrative pieces, and thrilled to start our next unit.
Writing: We worked on revising and editing our personal narratives. We had teacher and peer conferences and decided how to publish our work. Students who finished made front covers and About the Author pages. We enjoyed reading each other's work, and persevered through a long (and often interrupted) writing unit! We also worked on cursive and enjoy learning new letters.
Reading: We presented all of our Native American tribe posters, and learned a lot about tribes from different regions. Then, we read Tapenum's Day, which follows a day in the life of a Wampanoag boy during pilgrim times. In our new unit, we are learning to write about what we read using the C-E-R approach: Claim-Evidence-Reasoning. We will use this approach when we start our new guided reading groups next week.
Math: In math, we learned about the Rounding Roller Coaster and making reasonable estimates when combining 3-digit numbers. Then, we worked on adding 3-digit numbers. Students explored some different strategies, but if they do not have a "good-fit" strategy yet that's okay! We are now learning about finding the difference, but will continue working on both addition and subtraction. We also learned about telling time to the minute.
Social Studies: In social studies, we worked on a Scavenger Hunt based on a map of Massachusetts. With a partner, we looked for different components and areas on the map, such as Points of Interest, bodies of water, capitals, and borders. We will continue working on map skills and geography next week.
We are currently focusing on the core value of RESPONSIBILITY, which means taking care of yourself and others. It also means taking care of our classroom and working to keep it neat and avoid more broken materials. We received new Take Home folders, which will hopefully help to refresh our homework routine.
Have a wonderful weekend!
