Hi everyone,
We had a busy, full week in third grade! We attended the 5th Grade Concert.
In reading, we continued to work on strategies to help us during the MCAS. We are becoming experts at jailing the detail (mark up key words in the question), slashing the trash (putting an X next to answers that don't make sense), and marking up the evidence (marking up important parts of the passage). We also worked on writing responses to short response questions.
Our social studies focus was on maps. We specifically learned about perspectives. We drew the same object from 3 views: a "birds-eye" view, side view, and the bottom. We will continue working on maps and investigate our home state next week!
During writing, we worked on our personal narratives. We look forward to sharing them with you at our Writing Celebration next Friday, January 20th. We also worked on cursive, and completed an On Demand small moment story to show how much we have grown as writers from the beginning of this unit until now.
We are continuing to help Muffles with his Truffle shop during math. We designed new boxes and calculated the total price of each new box. Then, we worked on designing new assortment boxes by combining the original 2x5 boxes together. We completed a chart that listed the Number of 2x5 Boxes, Number of Truffles, and the Dimensions of the New Boxes. For example, combining 2 boxes would have a total of 20 truffles. The dimensions of the new box could be 2x10 or 4x5. Students are doing an excellent job of working with a partner and participating in a Math Congress after each new task!
We also participated in a second Understanding Our Differences program. We learned about being blind or having low vision. First, we watched a Nick News story about different kids who were born blind, became blind, or have low/tunnel vision. Then, went to different stations in small groups where we learned about Braille, walking with a cane, and other choices people with low vision have to help them to be independent. Last, we heard from a blind woman who explained her life and adjustments she's made since becoming blind. Students asked thoughtful questions and were intrigued by the topic and our wonderful guest speaker! Thank you to our parent volunteers who made this program possible and so enjoyable.
Please check your child's folder as our homework will be changing next week! Enjoy the long weekend.
