Hello students and families,
It's been a busy week back from break! Here is a look at our learning this week:
Reading: We read two books, The Raft and Peppe the Lamplighter, to launch our next reading unit. We examined the main characters of both stories and learned strategies to understand the character's traits and emotions. We learned that traits are the character's personality that we infer based on what they say, do, or think. Emotions are the character's reactions to events that happen to them, and can change often throughout a story. We will continue our study of characters in guided reading groups next week.
Writing: Students are doing an excellent job of working on their informational books! They are moving along in the writing process from organizing their ideas, listing facts, and turning their ideas into drafts. We also did a little work for our Student Led Conferences. Students organized their portfolios, reflected on their progress, and thought about areas where they are "outstanding" and where they "need improvement."
Math: This week, we worked with Tetrominoes - 4 cubes arranged in different ways. Students found all of the 2-D tetronimo combinations, and then named the different tetronimoes based on their characteristics. We also explored the idea of area, and will continue with area and perimeter next week.
S'Math: Students were excited to start our new Science+Math unit, called S'Math. S'Math is a hands-on Inquiry unit that allows us to explore and measure materials in the world around us. Our first investigation had teams sort different objects into groups based on what materials they are made of. Teams then explained their reasoning for the different groups and where they placed the items. We look forward to our next investigation next week! (Ms. K will be teaching this as a lot of time and materials are involved! More information here.)
