Dear students and families,
We are writing our Thursday journals today, since there is no school tomorrow! We've had a busy, short week, and can't wait to share some details about our learning with you.
In reading, we have been meeting with our guided reading mystery groups. We are enjoying Agatha, Girl of Mystery: The Curse of the Pharaoh, Nate the Great and the Phony Clue, Milo and Jazz: The Case of the Poisoned Pig, The Fenway Foul-Up, and The Ball Game with No One at Bat. Groups are focusing on making, and revising, predictions as they read. They are also working on taking notes and keeping track of characters, clues, and inferences as they read.
In writing, we are finishing our adapted folktales. Some students typed, while others wrote on the special 3rd Grade Final Draft Paper (donations welcome, see our Amazon list!). Next week, we will start our next unit: personal narratives. We will brainstorm topics that are important to us, and then decide on a small moment to write about.
In science, we learned about the layers of bark. We colored in a tree and showed the layers of bark. In the center, there is heartwood. Outside of that, there is sapwood where you can get the sap. The next layer is the cambium, followed by the inner bark. Last, there is the outer bark, which protects the tree. (By Aiden and Jinn Teagan)
In social studies, we are moving onto our next unit: Maps! We also brought in our wonderful timeline projects. Students did an excellent job of following directions and describing important events from their lives. We are enjoying hearing each other's timeline presentations.
Our focus in word work this week was suffixes. We learned about making words plural using -es or -s. Students did well making words plural, and will continue with different suffixes next week!
We hope everyone has a wonderful 3-day weekend!
