Hello students and families!
We've had another busy week in room 48. Our classroom looks very different from when we started out in September! Most days, students follow the "formula" to write a morning message for the next day. They also help to build the schedule, help classmates, and cooperate as a community to make decisions. As I've mentioned before, they are also giving feedback about each others' work and having respectful conversations about different approaches to their learning. I hope to have students showing even more responsibility and leadership in the coming months!
Math: We started off our unit titled "The Big Dinner," in which students are helping me to plan a Thanksgiving meal for 24 guests. We started off working in partners to calculate the cost of a 24-pound turkey, which was priced at $1.25 per pound. With our partner, we developed a strategy and then explained our thinking on a poster. We then met with other pairs to determine the accuracy of our answer. We held a Math Congress, where certain pairs presented their posters and thinking to the group and received feedback. We learned about multiplication strings, which are similar to the ratio tables--if we know one fact, we can use it to figure out another fact. We continued our work by calculating the cost of apples and carrots by the pound, and will hold another Math Congress on Monday to discuss our strategies and patterns we found. Check out some photos of the Big Dinner below!
Reading: We finished our marvelous mystery unit this week! Guided reading groups moved to different stations and worked on answering open response questions, filling in mystery story maps, and writing their opinions of the different books. Some groups also met for phonics work with the 1-1-1 rule, fluency practice, or discussing the mystery elements from the text.
Writing: Our small moment stories are coming along! Some students have stuck with one story, while others have multiple narratives started that they are narrowing down to revise and publish (see photos below). We often end our writing sessions with the Author's Chair, which has been fantastic. Students are very respectful when giving suggestions, often starting with a positive ("I like how you...") and then framing suggestions in a non-judgmental way ("One thing you could change/revise is...). Ms. Doucette came in to help us with typing on Google Docs. Next week, we will revise and have conferences before rewriting and publishing our spectacular stories.
Spelling: During our Fundations lessons, we learned about the 1-1-1 spelling rule, which applies to words with 1 closed syllable, 1 vowel, and 1 consonant after the vowel, like RUN. We reviewed closed syllables to help us determine when a word follows the 1-1-1 rule. When adding the -ing or -ed suffix to these words, we learned to double the consonant, like in RUNNING. We will continue to practice with 1-1-1 words and suffixes next week.
Science: We wrapped up our trees unit by filling in "What I Learned" in our science notebooks. We reviewed how trees make their own food, through photosynthesis, and made our own photosynthesis diagrams. The diagrams included the "ingredients" that go in to make the process happen, water+sunlight(energy)+carbon dioxide. We also labeled that the process results in sugar, or glucose, which is food for the plant as well as oxygen. Enjoy some photos of our Kahoot review below!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
