Hi everyone!
Here is a look at what we have been working on this week.
Math: During math, we learned the Partial Sums Strategy to help us solve addition problems. Students continue to do an excellent job "proving" their answers and finding good-fit strategies. We also worked on problems with three or more addends. In groups, we assigned one student to different jobs: write and explain the problem, solve with a good-fit strategy, explain the strategy in words, and prove the answer using a different approach. Students did a fantastic job and are showing real growth in their addition and subtraction skills. Next week, we start a unit called The Big Dinner.
Writing: We are continuing to work on our small moment stories. We worked more with storyteller's voice, and completed some "Show, Not Tell" activities to help us develop as writers. Students are attending writing conferences where they can get helpful feedback about how to revise and rework their narrative writing.
Spelling: We are continuing our work with suffixes this week, such as -s, -es, -est, -ing, and -er. Students thought of examples for each suffix type, and divided the word into base word + suffix. We examined words that change when a suffix is added, like hop -> hopping.
Crocodile River Music: On Monday, we attended a lively presentation from Crocodile River Music. We traveled from West Africa to Brazil, and ended up in Trinidad, hearing traditional music along the way. We learned about instruments and songs, like the Samba. We clapped, danced, and sang along with the music. Students really enjoyed the performance (see below)!

Reading: In guided reading groups, we are working on open response questions. We are practicing how to echo the question, and how to use evidence to back up our answer. Some groups are using highlighters to help with these skills. We are also identifying the elements of mystery in our different books, and some of us continue to make and revise predictions about the different mysteries! We will wrap up our mystery unit next week.
Science: This week, we learned the distinctions between Deciduous and Coniferous trees. We took notes on some of the similarities and difference between the two types of trees. We also attended a fantastic field trip to Moose Hill in Sharon, where we learned more about trees, seeds, layers of the forest, ways of identifying trees, and nature preservation. We learned about the basics of photosynthesis and talked about the "recipe" (carbon dioxide, sunlight, water) and the "results" (oxygen and sugar). We also played an awesome review game in teams called Kahoot!
Have a great weekend!
