Hello everyone! Another short week full of learning in room 48.
Reading: We introduced our first unit of study for reading: Mysteries. Students did an excellent job learning about the elements of a mystery. We picked independent mystery books to read and tracked the different elements. We listened to Mystery at the Club Sandwich, and in Super Sleuth Teams determined the mystery elements (detective, clues, suspects, etc.). We also made reading choices to improve our fluency: read to self, read to someone, or listen to reading, while Mrs. Kalich met with students to conference about their independent reading.
Math: On Tuesday, we completed a Fall assessment to help form our WIN math groups. We focused on subtraction strategies and checking our work. We also worked on line plots and reviewed the importance of showing our work. Also, we tried some algebra, or problems with missing information. The number sentences were missing a plus or minus sign, which students added to make the sentence true. For example, 9 _ 12 = 21 or 18 = 28 _ 10.
Writing: Students were excited to finally get a chance to decorate writing folders with pictures and drawings that inspire us. We worked on using "3rd grade paper" and wrote in both print and cursive. We also practiced our cursive on whiteboards, remembering to never lift the marker until the word or letters are complete.
Spelling: We continued to review the word endings -k, -ck, -tch. We determined the number of sounds in each digraph or blend. We will do a word sort of each word ending to ensure our understanding. Our first spelling test is tomorrow!
Science: Students created detailed diagrams of Saplings (young trees) from Ms. Merrel's backyard. They included the needles, color, small branches, and even the texture of the soil. Then, we did a gallery walk to see our classmates' work. We did a check-in about what trees have, are, and need. We also learned ways of identifying trees and observing like a scientist.
Reminders:
-Spelling Dictation due tomorrow
-MCAS Math packet due tomorrow
-POW (optional) due tomorrow
Students are doing an awesome job with their homework so far! Thank you for supporting their organization and learning. I will be out tomorrow for a wedding in Arizona, but hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
