Hello everyone! Here are some updates about our week.
Math: We worked on addition and subtraction strategies this week. We recognized that place value can help us extend the facts we know. For example, 7+5=12, so 70+50=120. We also learned about solving word problems with the "three-read" strategy. This helps us to read word problems critically to find out what the question is about, what the problem is asking, and what information will help us to solve it. Then, we had students take on the role of teacher and show various strategies on the board. We learned sentence frames to help us add on to, or respectfully disagree with, classmates' work, and did a wonderful job of "proving" our answers.
Writing: This week, we used our folders to inspire Small Moment stories about important people and places in our lives. We then learned about using a Storyteller's Voice in our writing, rather than a News Reporter Voice. We learned that a storyteller's voice describes actions that took place, uses dialogue, describes what we saw/smelled/tasted/heard/felt, and describes images around the storyteller. Then, thanks to some awesome video clip ideas from Ms. Champagne, we watched short videos and then used our own Storyteller Voices to describe them. We certainly have some excellent storytellers in our classroom!
Science: We did an exploration of different tree posters and wrote down 3 facts, 2 connections, and 1 question about trees. Students found interesting information, like how some trees grow over 200 feet tall! Students are looking forward to learning more about trees, and next week we will label the parts of a tree and learn more about what trees have, can do, and are.
Spelling: Our spelling rules this week were (1) know that qu and w make the a say /o/ and (2) know the 5 closed syllable exceptions: old, ild, ind, olt, ost. Students did a fantastic job reviewing closed syllables and glued sounds. They were also super flexible about taking the test in the conference room, and worked very hard on their handwriting.
Reading: During reading, we continued our interactive mystery read-alouds. We started with Piggins, and worked to predict the ending and identify the mystery elements of the story. We also worked on Super Sleuth Notebooks to document the information from The Mystery of King Karfu. Students worked together to keep track of important clues, red herrings, and suspects. Finally, we read the unsolved "mystery from history" about the Mary Celeste. Students enjoyed developing their own theories about what could have happened to the ship's crew. We also enjoyed dressing up as our favorite book characters (see photo).
Next week, we will continue working with mysteries in our guided reading groups!
