We've had a SUPER week in third grade! We are working on filling our classroom bucket by showing kindness, cooperation, and helping our classroom community to be the best it can be! Students voted for a Reading Marathon as our prize, and we hope to fill our bucket before Halloween.
Reading: During reading, we worked on our fluency, expression, and acting skills while participating in Reader's Theater! Three groups practiced three different folktale plays: The Three Little Pigs, The Gingerbread Man, and The Paper Bag Princess. Students did an excellent job of being cooperative group members throughout the process of choosing parts, rehearsing lines and actions, and creating scenery and props. I look forward to the performances tomorrow!
Writing: As a class, we worked on adapting the folktale Little Red Riding Hood. Then, we worked in groups to adapt The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Groups recognized that certain elements had to stay the same, so that the tale would be recognizable. Also, when certain elements were changed (like the characters) it led to other changes in the story (like the setting or problem). After planning the adapted story, some groups published and illustrated their story. Next, we will choose our own folktale to adapt!
Math: This week, we reviewed Fact Families and how they help us with addition and subtraction. We also learned about Fact Extensions, where we use basic facts we know (like 2+7=9) to help with harder facts (20+70=90). Then, we applied our addition and subtraction skills while working on In-Out machines. Students did well in determining the rule, or filling in what number would go "in" or come "out" of the machine. Finally, we worked on number stories and how to use a diagram to help us solve number story problems. We practiced guided M.A.T.H centers and did an even better job than last week during transitions and working in small groups!
Science: In science, we reviewed what is true about all trees (have leaves, roots, and trunks) and what is true about only CONIFERS and about only DECIDUOUS trees. Students took notes and did an excellent job explaining how all trees have seeds, but conifers enclose seeds in cones while deciduous trees hold seeds in fruit. Finally, we did a pre-test about the parts of a tree, and will learn about the specific parts of a tree next week.
Word Work: For our first rule, we learned about the /k/ sound and when to use -k or use -ck. We also reviewed the digraph -ch and trigraph -tch, and determined when to use each word ending. We worked on tapping out the words and how to mark up words according to their sounds (#, blends), syllables (# and open/closed), and type of vowel (long/short).
Have a wonderful weekend!
