We've had a really fun week in room 31, and we earned it by filling our classroom bucket!
Writing: I am happy to report that students BEG for more writing time every day, and are really enjoying adapting their own fairy tales! They are showing real writing stamina throughout the writing process: planning, drafting, and editing. Today, many students started the final step: publishing, or rewriting their final draft. We learned about separating our writing into paragraphs, reviewed handwriting expectations, and read stories out loud to check for a balance of dialogue, description, and action.
Reading: Our class reward for filling our bucket was a reading marathon! We read for one hour an one minute (with snack, recess, read aloud, music, and some other breaks in between!) This week, we also learned about Character Traits. We discussed the traits of Seymour Sleuth, and then used evidence from the text to support which traits describe him the best. We also practiced Guided Reading, where we will rotate in groups to different reading centers such as teacher time, read to self, and guided reading work. Next week we will launch our first round of guided reading!
Math: We continued to work on addition and subtraction strategies this week. We worked on a You Be the Teacher activity, where students had to correct an incorrect answer and then "teach" a strategy and prove their answer. Then, we created posters that detailed the steps for different + and - strategies. We worked on word problems with 3 or more addends, and then played math games and reviewed for our Unit 2 assessment.
We also had a blast at the CAS program "The Dragon King" - although some of us got sprayed by the dragon! We have another special presentation on Monday from an author/illustrator, which will certainly inspire us to finish our folktales next week.
Enjoy some photos of our visit from an Arborist, the Dragon King marionette show, and our awesome Reading Marathon/cozy day!
