Hello students and families!
We are having a terrific third week in third grade. Here is a look into some of our learning this week.
Reading: Students continued meeting with Ms. K for book conferences, in small reading groups, or reading and filling in a book log. We also learned about the 15 Book Genre Challenge, which is an optional activity to help us keep our reading diet balanced.
On Wednesday, we listened to Enemy Pie and learned some "moves" when we are having a Book Talk with a teacher. Good readers “show what they know” when reading with a teacher. We learned about "right there" level 1 questions, "think about it" level 2 questions, and "big picture" level 3 questions. We discussed the importance of looking back in the book, summarizing in order with the details we remember, and asking for a teacher to repeat the question when we aren't sure how to answer.
On Friday, we will learn and practice having a Book Talk in a reading group with our classmates!

Math: We continued working on multiplication Picture Problems and learned important multiplication terms: factor, product, multiples, and equal groups. We solved classmates' multiplication problems using repeated addition, drawing the equal groups, or using facts we already know. On Tuesday, we took our first assessment where we chose an item that always comes in equal groups, drew several groups of the item, and then wrote sentences to describe it. We also wrote an equation that described the picture. Students did an excellent job on their first math assessment!
Writing: We did our first Quick Write this week about our name. During a quick write, students write without stopping for a brief period of time. Students wrote fictional stories, personal narratives, and even rhyming lists! We had our first Author's Chair where students shared their work and then asked for questions and comments. Third graders did a great job of giving kind, specific feedback to our authors! It was fun to see how differently students respond to the same topic. We look forward to another quick write, and launching writer's workshop, next week!
Cursive: We started working in our cursive books with the letter a. Students learned the expectations for cursive and the word perseverance. We learned about the writing (bottom) line, middle divider, and top line, which help us to form letters correctly. We "sky-wrote" the letter step by step, traced, then tried it on our own. Students were excited to see their cursive a's improve with practice! Next week, we will learn the letter d.
Friday Journals: On Friday, we will learn about and start our Friday Journals. Every Friday, your child will be writing a letter in this journal. They will be sharing some things that they learned in class or proud school moments from the week. Feel free to write a response to your child in their journal. Students love to hear from you! Although it takes time to read and respond, it opens up a great dialogue about what they are learning and doing at school each week.
Social/Emotional Learning: We continue to work on quick, quiet transitions and following expectations. Our class also voted on a name for our Quiet Place (the counter area near the sink): The Quiet Corner. A donation of a small rug would be very welcome to make our space more cozy and calming! Next week, we will be focusing on the Franklin core value of cooperation.
Reminders:
* Field trip forms DUE on Monday, 9/25!
* Curriculum Night Tuesday, 9/26 at 6PM in our classroom {room 31}
* Arnold Arboretum Field Trip, Friday 9/29
Take care,
Ms. K
