Hi everyone!
We had a wonderful 5-day week in room 48! We introduced the WHAT AND WHY board that lists our daily/weekly objectives. We also learned about producing Quality Work, and created a check list to ensure we are proud to share all of the work we complete in third grade. The checklist included reminders like neatness, personal best, following directions, and careful conventions (spelling, punctuation, capitalization).
Math: We have been working hard on data and graphing this week. We started off with bar graphs, and created our own Favorite Halloween Treats graph as a class. Then, we moved to pictographs. Students did an excellent job looking for the graph key to determine how many items are represented by the graph pictures.
We then moved to line plots. We learned about the axis label, which tells what the categories of the graph mean (for example, student test scores). Then, we identified that each "x" usually represents one person, or data point. We made line plots about letters in our name and number of pets. Then, we played a game called Lucky Number where we made our own line plots.
Reading: This week, we did a second reading of Snowflake Bentley. We read the sidebars, which contained more information about Wilson Bentley's life and family. We then did a reading response where students could describe, compare, or evaluate the book. We worked on comparing and contrasting the story to our own lives.
Then, we read a biography about Sonia Sotomayor. We discussed the difficulties that Sonia overcame to reach her goal. Then, we compared and contrasted Sonia and Wilson, who were both hardworking, inspirational people. Another reading strategy or power verb we learned about was visualize. We listened to The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer and drew sketches of how we visualized the story in our mind. Then we shared our sketches on post-its next to the quotes from the book.
In reading groups, we worked on practicing our weekly spelling homework. We also listened to books on CD, and read with a partner.
Writing: We continued to practice building our writing stamina with quick writes, and added the topic SHARKS to our writing folders. We also opened the Author's Chair, where students can share their writing and receive feedback. We wrote a small moment story so teachers can assess our writing.
Science: As a class, we developed a K-W-L chart about trees. We listed facts we Know, and then thought of things we Want to know. At the end of the unit, we will add what we Learned. We completed a pre-test that had a detailed tree diagram with blank spaces, and did our best guesses for what each label identified. We look forward to our special tree presentation next Wednesday!
Spelling: We started our Fundations practice by reviewing letter sounds, digraphs, and blends. We saw that digraphs make one sound, like sh- in ship, and blends make two sounds, like sl- in slip. We practiced our Spelling Homework which will come home next week. Students did an excellent job during Fundations!
Homework: We practiced math and spelling homework in class this week, and will have our first week of homework next week!
On Monday, students will bring home a spelling packet, and math worksheet.
Students will have a nightly worksheet Monday-Thursday, always due the following morning.
Have a wonderful weekend!
