Reading/ELA: This week, we worked hard to build our reading stamina. Stamina is doing anything for a long period without giving up. Our class is up to 14 minutes of uninterrupted real reading! We also had reading conferences with Ms. K, and some of us started reading groups with a teacher (As part of our differentiated instruction model, students will be working in small groups with reading and classroom teachers in a variety of spaces during our reading block this year). We also learned about how to PICK good fit books using the I PICK Method: Purpose, Interest, Comprehension, and Know the Words.
Math: Students did a great job during the first lessons of our new unit: Multiplication and Division! We focused on equal groups and made pictures that helped us to think of items that always come in equal groups, such as eyes (2's) and sides on a square (4's). We also practiced with our new math workbooks and a new part of our lessons called 10 Minute Math. We also did a review of place value using the Sticker Station, which sells stickers in strips of 10 or in singles. We look forward to creating and solving more equal groups picture stories next week!
Hopes and Goals: This week, we worked on a 2-part project to share our hopes and goals for 3rd grade. Students brainstormed different ideas and then drafted one hope and goal for the school year. Then, they wrote their goal onto a cloud. The second part challenged students to think of how they will achieve their goal. Students helped one another to think of steps they can take to accomplish their goals. Then, they wrote their "how" onto a Hot Air Balloon, and decorated the final product.
Rules and Routines: In order to meet our goals, we continued to review Franklin rules and third grade routines like morning work, packing up, walking in line, and class meetings. We also opened our Take a Break Space, and listened to a book called A Quiet Place to understand why students sometimes need a quiet place.
We also ended our week "on a Positive Note" and freeze-danced our way into line. Have a wonderful weekend!
