Hi everyone!
Our first FULL week has flown by! We have been keeping busy and continuing to get to know one another, as well as the expectations for third grade. Our class had a lot of fun role-playing our Franklin school rules, and have been doing an excellent job of following the 5 rules:
Reading: This week our focus during reading was building our STAMINA. Stamina is doing something for a long time without giving up. As a class, we decided on a goal of 30 minutes of reading stamina before January, and 40 minutes before May! On our first attempt, we only read for 2 minutes, but by Friday we made it up to 15! Using the I PICK method has helped us find good-fit books, which help us to read for longer. The method stands for: Purpose, Interest, Comprehension, and Know the words - all of which are important to consider when choosing a book. We also reviewed book genres and where to find them, and how to have a balanced reading diet.
Writing: In writing, we worked on our Hopes and Goals for third grade. Students thought of three questions when determining a goal: WHAT is my goal, WHY is it my goal, and HOW will I accomplish it? Teachers and partners helped us to think through these questions and then draft, edit, and publish our goal.
Math: We kicked off math this week by exploring the math tools we will use in third grade. We also practiced transitioning between centers and cleaning up materials so we will be ready for guided math. We looked through our math journals and shared questions, connections, and/or what we look forward to learning about in math this year. We practiced three "types" of math: whole class work {skip counting review}, small group/partner work {addition top-it}, and independent work {telling time check-in}. Students also did a Numbers Hunt in our classroom to find, measure, and count the different numbers around us.
Science: We set up our science/social studies binders and worked on covers to keep our sections organized. We also learned about making scientific observations, and using science tools like hand lenses to help us make detailed drawings, take notes, or write lab reports.
Reminder: Please do not allow students to bring in special toys, activities, or even special school supplies (markers, reading lights, etc.). It is a distraction when one person has something that the rest of our class does not, and we are working on building community through shared supplies (as well as limiting distractions!)
It was wonderful to meet many of you this week at Hopes and Goals conferences and the school picnic! Thank you for being so supportive and welcoming, and have a great weekend!
Best,
Mrs. K
