Hello students and families!
We have had another great week in grade 3. Students continue to work on following directions quickly, transitioning quietly, and being kind to classmates. Here's a look at what we have been doing:
Writing: We kicked off writing this week with our own Heart Maps, that show people, places, activities, and things that are important to us. We also started "Quick Writes." During a quick write, our pencil never leaves the paper. We get our writing ideas down as quickly as possible. We've done a wonderful job of building our writing stamina and finding our voices as writers. We also worked in small groups to make posters that show the Franklin school rules, which were a helpful reminder of expected behavior.
Science: In science this week, we started our first unit: TREES! We completed a fun activity: Give One, Get One, Move On. This demonstrated our prior knowledge about trees so that we will learn new things and answer questions next week. We added the activity to our science binder and learned how to keep our work organized using the Table of Contents. On Wednesday next week, we have a special visitor and presentation, as long as it doesn't rain!
Math: Our focus in math this week was telling time. We practiced telling time to the minute and then worked a lot on elapsed time. {Try asking us elapsed time questions at home! Such as: If I leave at 7:30AM, and my drive to work takes 45 minutes, when do I get to work?} We also practiced working independently, with a teacher, with a partner, or with a group in math this week.
Reading: In reading, we met our first goal for reading stamina: 39 minutes!!! Our next goal is to read for over 40 minutes, but we were excited about passing the 30 minute mark. Also, we went over the expectations when we read with a teacher. Mrs. Kalich acted as a student, and different "teachers" asked questions about a book. We learned the importance of looking back in the book, summarizing the book in order, and thinking as we read. Then, Mrs. K started reading with students to assess their current reading level. Students are doing a WONDERFUL job so far!
We also listened to the book A Quiet Place, which taught us about using our imagination to find a quiet place when things are frustrating. We opened the Break Place in our classroom, where we can go to take a break, count to 10, and then rejoin the class.
Reminders; Please return all flu shot forms. I hope to see many of you Tuesday at Curriculum Night!
